PhD Research: From Kaikan to Konik: Facts and myths surrounding the European wild horse and the Polish Konik

Cis van Vuure studied the history of the extinct European wild horse that lived after the last ice age in Western and Central Europe, and the emergence and current functioning of the (Polish) konik breed, that has the appearance and lifestyle of the European wild horse.

Van Vuure examined the back breeding experiment of the Polish researcher Tadeusz Vetulani, and the role played by these two types of horses in the imagination of people in the course of the centuries. The back breeding experiment of Vetulani needs to be seen as incompetent and non-successful. The Konik is not the most recent descendant of the European wild horse, and neither the most similar in appearance. The image surrounding the konik is highly susceptible to political and social developments. The konik acts not only as an object of Polish national pride, but also as an icon of the new nature control policy.
