PhD Research: Peasants and water boards. The administrative development of water management and the participatory culture in Delfland in the sixteenth century.

Carla de Wilt examined the development of water management and the involvement of residents in water management in the Hoogheemraadschap (water board) of Delfland in the sixteenth century. She discovered that the interaction between the local, regional and central level of government played an important role in administrative developments. In particular, the forces from bottom-up had far-reaching consequences. The conflicts between the regional water managers and local officials led to proceedings before courts.
